Requirements

You will need to complete the following requirements prior to working in the United States:

Requirement #1
You must have at least 2 years of practice experience as a nurse.

Requirement #2
You must obtain a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For registered nurses, you must submit a score of 540 on the written TOEFL or 207 on the computer-based TOEFL. Our experience is that most Scandinavians do well on the TOEFL since they speak English fluently, however you should still study diligently for the exams. We recommend that you purchase a TOEFL study book before you take the exam.

Requirement #3
You must take and pass The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) exam. This exam provides evidence of your knowledge of nursing to the licensing boards within the United States. The CGFNS is only offered 3 times per year, so please plan accordingly.

Requirement #4
This requirement comprises a review of the nurse’s education, registration and licensure. You will need to submit documentation from your educational institution (in English) regarding your degree and related coursework. In addition, you will be required to provide evidence of registration and licensure from your originating country of employment. Your credentials will be evaluated by an independent party to determine your eligibility status for employment within the United States.

Requirement #5
You must meet the requirements for a Permanent Residency Visa as determined by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly INS). You will need to fulfill all the above requirements in order to be eligible for the visa screening process. NordicMed will assist you in sponsorship of your green card.

Requirement #6
You will need to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX Exam). The NCLEX is an examination that tests your knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of nursing. A passing score is required by the U.S. boards of nursing when granting a license to practice nursing in the United States.

Requirement #7
You must apply for and obtain a state nursing license to practice within the state of your choice.
